Every time I come across Miyuki’s Evening Drinks, I find myself stopping to watch. I used to wonder why Miyuki was so committed to her daily ritual. After holding back from eating out all day and working so hard, wouldn’t it be exhausting to come home and spend even more time and energy cooking? But after a few years of working, I gradually began to understand what it meant. Work had started to make me feel numb. Every evening, I would come home, mindlessly scroll through my phone, take a shower, go to bed, and wake up to repeat the same routine. Life began to feel empty and meaningless. Eventually, I grew tired of takeout and cafeteria food, so I started cooking for myself. As my cooking skills improved, I occasionally surprised myself with a genuinely delicious meal. Those moments gave me a sense of accomplishment, but more importantly, they made me feel as though I was finally treating myself to something special. It was these small moments of happiness that gave me something to look forward to. I began wondering what I would cook next, what ingredients I might try, and what flavors I might discover. Having something to anticipate each day felt completely different from the aimlessness I used to experience after work. Some people find joy in traveling. Others love hiking, while some look forward to dance classes after work. It doesn’t really matter what brings you joy. What matters is having something you genuinely love and something to look forward to. Because when you have those things, even the ordinary days become a little more meaningful, and life feels a little less difficult to get through.
