@nflscope: BREAKING NEWS: Michael Penix Jr. has officially been benched in favor of Tua Tagovailoa after one of the worst performances of his young NFL career. In the Atlanta Falcons’ Week 8 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Penix struggled mightily in wet, sloppy conditions, finishing 8-of-24 for just 125 yards with zero touchdowns and a staggering four interceptions in a humiliating 16-0 shutout loss. The Buccaneers dominated on the ground with over 300 rushing yards, while Baker Mayfield didn’t even complete a pass, yet Atlanta’s offense was completely shut down. This decision comes after Penix had shown real progress in recent weeks, including a strong three-touchdown performance in the win over the 49ers. However, the early-game meltdown against Tampa — including three interceptions in the first half alone — forced the Falcons’ hand. Tua Tagovailoa, the former Dolphins Pro Bowler who signed with Atlanta this offseason and has been the primary backup, will now take over under center. Tua previously saw limited action earlier this season in relief of an injured Penix during the overtime loss to the Ravens, where he also threw an interception. The move raises major questions about the Falcons’ quarterback situation moving forward. Penix, the 2024 first-round pick, was expected to be the long-term starter after recovering from last season’s ACL injury, but consistency and decision-making issues continue to surface. Tua brings veteran experience and a higher floor in the short term, but his own injury history and recent play leave plenty of uncertainty about how long this change will last. With the Falcons sitting at 3-5 and fighting for relevance in the NFC South, this benching could be a one-game adjustment or the beginning of a larger shift at the most important position on the roster. What do you think — is this the right move, or should the Falcons stick with Penix and let him work through the growing pains?
