A Georgia father who bought the firearm his teenage son is accused of using in a deadly high school shooting has been found guilty of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. After deliberating for less than two hours Tuesday, a jury convicted Colin Gray on all counts stemming from the September 2024 attack at Apalachee High School, located northeast of Atlanta. The case places Gray among a growing number of parents nationwide who have faced criminal consequences after their children were accused in school shootings. Jurors found Gray guilty of second-degree murder in the deaths of 14-year-old students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo. Under Georgia law, that charge applies when a child’s death results from the felony offense of cruelty to children. He was also convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the killings of teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Cristina Irimie, 53. In addition to the four fatalities, another teacher and eight students were wounded. Gray was further convicted on multiple counts of reckless conduct and cruelty to children. He showed little visible reaction as the verdict was announced and jurors confirmed their decision. Deputies placed him in handcuffs at the defense table after the polling concluded. A grand jury indicted 57-year-old Weems, a former Baltimore City police officer, on 21 charges related to abus3 allegations from at least 3 victims at his wife's daycare, "Lil Kidz Kastle," in Owings Mills. He worked there as a bus driver. Weems' trial is scheduled to begin May 6, 2024. Police had charged Weems in 2022 with 3 counts each of SA of a minor, second-degree ass*ult, third-degree s3x offense & fourth-degree s3xual contact, along with 1 charge for displaying obscene material to a minor. Shanteeri Weems was sentenced to 4 years in prison for sh00ting her husband in a Washington D.C. hotel room after learning of the accusations. An investigation into James Weems began on July 3, 2022, when parents reported to police their 10-year-old daughter told them "Mr. James" showed her porn0graphy on a daycare bus & that he touched her inappropriately at the facility's playground. A search & seizure warrant was executed on July 18, 2022, in which Weems' cell phone was seized. A search of Weems browsing history corroborated what the 10-year-old girl told police. On July 21, 2022, a 7-year-old boy who attended the daycare said in an interview with the Department of Social Services which was investigating Weems' contact with other children, that he was touched inappropriately at the daycare. Investigators were able to narrow down the suspect to Weems. On July 23, 2022, officers responded to a reported past SA. Parents reported their 12-year-old daughter told them "Mr. James" touched her in a "very inappropriate way." The girl told police in an interview "Mr. James" also asked her to take explicit pictures of herself, but that she said no.
