Let’s talk about PEACE. And let me tell you a cultural story that’s happening in Israel right now that you might have not heard about. In 1969, after the Six-Day War and while the War of Attrition was raging, a soldier who was wounded in the Six-Day War wrote lyrics to a song called “A Song for Peace,” Shir LaShalom. It was performed by an IDF singing troupe, and it caused an immediate public and political mess. There was a war going on, with all Arab countries surrounding the young, tiny state of Israel committed to its destruction. How dare you speak of peace? How dare you? But they did. The song was actually forbidden at the time by some generals from being played to the soldiers, but it didn’t help. It became a pop-cultural anthem. In 1995, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was singing it on stage at the biggest rally for peace, and as he walked off stage, he was assassinated. The blood-stained lyric page became a painful reminder of the price of peace in this region. Years have passed. Hamas took over Gaza, and despite a monumental peace agreement with the Gulf states, the hope for local peace with the Palestinians and the rest of the region was all but lost. Israelis woke up to realize that there might not be a partner among the Palestinians for peace yet. But look at what happened a couple weeks ago in the southern Negev Desert of Israel. Tens of thousands of young adults, who were not only not born when the song was written, they weren’t even around when Rabin was assassinated, are chanting for peace, daring to call for peace, celebrating the hope for peace. In times of war, a song for peace is a revolutionary statement. But this is what Israelis are about. Despite the pain, despite the wars that are happening, Israelis want peace. And when the time comes, and a hand will be reached from the other side, there will be an Israeli hand here to receive it. When you think of Israel as the source of all evil in the world, when you hate it with seething, venomous passion, when you want to boycott or cancel the world’s only Jewish state, think of those people and think again. To peace. 🕊️
