learjet, swept wing plane, made for very high altitude and high speed, plane started around 42,000 feet, descending due to turbulence in a storm cell, requests to climb back up, at the 40k+ feet range the plane is in what’s called the “coffin corner” where stall speed and mach/critical overspeed is a very thin margin of error, probably went to accelerate to climb again and that’s where the mach tuck everyone keeps mentioning began to take effect. 42,000 feet is right around the max altitude for a 737 jet. imagine your highest flight, that’s where they started the downward decent where gravity and aerodynamics made it speed up the entire way down. (the pilot literally said “mayday we are in an overspeed condition”). it was a mach tuck.
