BUT “feminine hygiene” wasn't always just about cleanliness… it was also used as a euphemism for birth control! at a time when access to reliable contraception was limited + laws restricted how contraceptives could be advertised or sold, companies could market vaginal douches using language about cleanliness, intimacy + marital happiness. alll while doubling as a birth control method - though it wasn’t very effective and could seriously injure women who used it. historical Lysol formulations contained chemicals such as cresol, which could cause severe irritation, chemical burns + damage to vaginal tissue. poisonings and deaths associated with Lysol irrigation were also documented. and I think it's important to remember that women weren't doing this because they were stupid. they were navigating a world where reproductive information was restricted, reliable contraception wasn't always accessible + companies were MORE than happy to profit from their uncertainty. ALSO I have to mention the fact that YOU DO NOT NEED TO DOUCHE YOUR VAGINA!!! your vagina is SELF CLEANING. it has its own microbiome + naturally maintains an environment that helps protect against infection. douching can actually disrupt that balance + increase your risk of infections. and while we've thankfully moved beyond using LYSOL for vaginal hygiene, I think it's worth asking how much of the same messaging still exists today because how many products are STILL marketed to women by convincing us that our vaginas are dirty, embarrassing, smelly or somehow in need of fixing??? there's a pretty big difference between helping women understand + care for their bodies and convincing them there's something wrong with their bodies so they'll buy your product 🤷‍♀️
