We are long time Calgary residents and only recently moved downtown (near BMO) after always living in the burbs. Of course we noticed a huge difference in homeless encounters but not unexpected really.

I think we focus too much on the homeless part and not enough on the people part. we need to walk the walk and stop just throwing money at the issue. be a community and show kindness. homelessness is not a choice people make, it is forced upon people. society needs compassion. we get so caught up in what's going on in the world, we don't focus on our own community anymore.

i’ve also lived adjacent downtown my whole life, taken transit and hung out downtown all my teenage years, however i have noticed a huge difference since covid and the opioid epidemic in the homeless population becoming a lot more “scary” for lack of a better word, i always was open to having casual conversations with any homeless people cause they were so friendly but nowadays it’s very different.

as a born calgarian, you might be too young to see the change. I see it but I'm much older than you

Agree with you 100%!! Born here in '61 and things are pretty status quo overall. Big difference is the crime rate. That's changed 100 fold!

one fact about what we see more in homeless population is that with growth cones more people but no grith on shelters is #1 and the health care cut backs is #2,, as the city growth in buildings and many infrastructure , we oveook other very important factors across the city landscape, higher living cost and foods , less stable employment and the anou t if migration our city has been part of yes we busted at the seams and yet we don't all see it , so if we growth in people so shouldn't our difference di etse needs ? we have more homelessness and illness and drug use then before but yet have less in place to help or govern even monitor and open discussions about it's impact on growth, we are now reaching our city limits and still growing , building ECT but many cannot afford to find shelter nor jobs so that population in trades in the homeless area, we have not increased in shelters being build to help out with the high end influx of this situation so this is what we see more and more and it will become even more as the inflation continues to rise for the low income families they are the next homeless people without any shelter to house them even for 1 night , and as long as the city and province are blind to this it won't change but increases u now pay close to 1 thousand for a room to rent and that's without food nor other bills , how can that be in a city that rolls in trillions of high end head offices that do not reinvest in the city but their own CEO levels, some are not even Canadian owned they even bring in their own staff and get asap citenzenship, while our veterans go homeless due to inflation or illness and drug addiction not limited to street drugs , so now is it not our place today ft up our cities less fortunate cus we are all 1 paycheck Away from the down town strip that's a reality of our city and province, we grow in selfish areas but not in the humanitarian area of our own citizens that at one time paired into the system including fratucture rebuild, but cannot access the resource we give away to many but not the population at risk , so yes we see what we where blinded to for many years and now it's no long never acceptable or safe

I used to walk between City hall station and Edmonton trail towards Luke’s.. Cecil hotel used to be there and I’d cut through the parking lot. My whole life I’ve been here and it has got worse. I’ve had 9 attempted documented break ins at my apartment and live 10 minutes from Legacy, a newer “safe” neighborhood.
