Why is it that when a friend admits they got something wrong, you think, ‘Fair play, good on them,’ but when you do the same thing, you feel like an utter failure? In other people, saying sorry, or asking for help, or admitting that you like somebody feels brave, but in you, it feels pathetic. Well, the psychologist Anna Bruk calls this the beautiful mess effect. In her studies, Bruk and her team asked people to imagine somebody saying sorry, or confessing their love, or admitting their mistake. And when it comes to themselves, people see this as a weakness, but in other people, they see it as a sign of strength. For example, their team asked people to improvise a song to play in public, and it was almost always true that the singers were incredibly hard on themselves, and yet the jury was always far, far kinder than people thought. Bruk thinks it’s all to do with distance, because when it’s you, you know every tiny detail: your sweating palms, your wobbly legs, your blinking eyes, and the intensity of your own anxiety. But when you look at somebody further off, you see them as being only brave or honest, and the further back you stand, the kinder you tend to be. Vulnerability is still a risk, and not every room is safe. But Bruk’s team also found that being too hard on yourself is lessened by self-compassion. In other words, if you want to be more confident, to try more things, and get better at failing, you need to look on at yourself from a greater distance. Look at yourself as you would a friend, and treat yourself like you treat others.
