Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA — A 45-year-old Philippine citizen, Maria Elenor Lopez Rios, is facing federal charges after investigators allegedly discovered that she registered to vote and cast a ballot in a U.S. election despite never becoming an American citizen. According to federal investigators, Rios is a lawful permanent resident who allegedly registered to vote in Tulsa County in March 2022 by claiming she was a U.S. citizen. The investigation reportedly began when the Tulsa County Election Board reviewed records of individuals excused from jury duty because they were not American citizens. The information was referred to Homeland Security investigators, who subsequently identified Rios. Investigators allege that she voted in the November 8, 2022, general election while living in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. According to a federal affidavit, Rios admitted casting a ballot when questioned by investigators but reportedly said she was confused and did not understand that noncitizens were prohibited from voting. She also allegedly told investigators that she completed her voter registration while applying for a driver's license at an Oklahoma motor vehicle office. Federal authorities further allege that a subsequent U.S. citizenship application contained a statement denying that she had ever registered or voted in an election. Rios faces four charges involving falsely claiming American citizenship, making false statements during voter registration, submitting fraudulent registration documents, and unlawfully voting in a federal election. “Free and fair elections depend on the integrity of our voter registration and election systems,” said U.S. Attorney Christopher Nassar. “When individuals falsely claim U.S. citizenship to register or vote, they undermine the public’s trust in those systems and dilute the votes of American citizens. Our office will continue to work with our lawenforcement partners to safeguard the election process and ensure that only those legally eligible to vote are able to do so.” If convicted, Rios could face a maximum of five years in prison. The charges remain allegations, and she is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. #Tulsa #Oklahoma #MariaLopezRios #USA #japd
