@alegrakastens: Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP) therapy is the frontline treatment for OCD regardless of the theme 📣 People with POCD do ERP successfully every day #pocd #ocd
my exposure therapy for my pocd involved feeding my niece a bottle! i promise it’s nothing crazy!

It is important to clarify pedophilia isn’t actually the opposite of POCD, nor is it synonymous with predatory behavior. It’s persistent sexual(often and/or romantic too) attraction towards prepubescent children regardless of related behaviors. Someone with POCD isn’t more or less likely to be a pedophile, BUT they are significantly less likely to sexually abuse a child. It’s a separate psychological experience and it can be misleading wording when most severely misunderstand both. Overall I agree with this video otherwise but as someone who used to have severe POCD understanding how pedophilia worked was vital to recovering for me. At least for me, realizing “whether I’m a pedophile or not doesn’t matter cause I don’t want to harm kids at all” helped way more than hearing people call it the opposite.

do people know that exposure therapy isn't making bad things happen on purpose? like we don't give people with contamination OCD salmonella on purpose

My exposure therapy was letting my g-dchild fall asleep on my chest repeatedly. Thats it, all I did was comfort a baby to sleep without freaking out, its really nothin crazy.

I have POCD and I work as a teacher because I refuse to let my brain convince me I am unsafe to be around children.

I ended up doing my own erp therapy by hanging out with my niece and nephew lol I didn’t realize that’s what I was doing until like they were 3 and 2 and I was like oh, I’m not doing compulsions like I used to

please remember guys that erp is also NOT indulging in p/d/ph/l/a as someone with pocd. Seeking out explicit content of children is not how erp works, is not safe, and is not ethical. There’s also other forms of therapy for ocd than erp, but yeah, erp is really just exposure to children or the concept of children without freaking out 😭

does this person think that ERP for someone with obsessions/compulsions revolving around car accidents would be to intentionally crash their car?

My exposure therapy is literally smiling at kids in public. Because my POCD tells me if I do that everyone will think I am a pedophile “because why are you paying attention to a kid that isn’t yours?” My exposure therapy is calling kids is calling them their names instead of generic nicknames.

I’m a children’s theatre instructor and I basically do my own exposure therapy everyday, I still have some underlying fears that creep in but I also feel so much more confident than I was before I started working with kids

people just don't understand what exposure therapy is 😭 the whole purpose of exposure therapy is to show you that your fears are irrational and will not come true. an ocd therapist will tell you "leave your house in the morning without checking your oven" so that when you go back home, you'll see that your house is still standing because you didn't leave your oven on and this will lead you to trust yourself in knowing that you didn't turn your oven on for no reason before you left your house. the therapist will not tell you to turn your oven on and leave your house because that would only exacerbate the fear. the same applies to this situation. a therapist would tell you to do something normal around kids to prove to yourself that you are not a danger to them, like accompany your friend and their kid when they go to the park. they would NOT tell you to go and molest a child so that you can trust yourself in knowing that you wouldn't molest a child 😭 why does everybody take the very first thing that pops into their mind as a fact guys can we please think at least a little bit

I don’t have POCD. But I did have done exposure therapy for other types of controversial OCD thought patterns. It’s honestly ridiculous what exposure therapy can be and the things that you have as homework or session. I had to be stopped from finding a new therapist after my therapist started bringing her golden retriever to session. Most people that would get them into therapy happily no skips

Let’s also remember that OCD is ego-dystonic! It feeds on what your worst fears are and uses it to torment you by making you believe that you are those things!!! This fact saved my life because from age 8 I was convinced I was a pedo and it only was when a therapist explained this to me at 15 that I stopped hating myself. I’ve never done exposure therapy but medication and delaying compulsive behaviour has helped a bunch

I think this is the result (in part) of the term ‘intrusive thought’ being used in common conversation to basically mean ‘thing I can’t stop thinking about because I want to do it even if I don’t think I should’ (like buying something you can’t totally afford). Intrusive thoughts are not actually ‘fun thing I have to tell myself no to’. They’re hellish, they’re nightmares, they’re our brains telling us that the world around us is going to fall apart because of x or unless we do y.

I struggle with POCD and part of my homework my therapist assigned me was just to try to play with my little brother a bit each day. It’s really more about learning to deal with your emotions and ground yourself outside your intrusive thoughts and with reality. My OCD goes pretty hand in hand with my CPTSD and I just need to rewrite my brain to understand that just because bad things happened to me as a child doesn’t mean I’m someone who’d do that to others. In my experience ERP doesn’t make the intrusive thoughts go away or get any quieter it’s more like you learn to see through them and understand your thoughts and who you are are separate things. You control your actions and the person you are, your thoughts don’t define you.

Problem is the “if you were one you wouldn’t feel bad about it so you can’t be one” doesn’t work bc lowk what if I’m one of those self hating ones that spend their lives hating themselves (diagnosed with OCD and am in CBT)

I wasn't able to look at a baby and think aww they're so cute, even hearing someone tell the parents your baby is cute made me think they were a pedophile and were gonna harm that child, but sure I guess going on public transport without looking straight at my phone the whole time to avoid potentially seeing a child in public is dangerous boooooh

I imagined also just…going to a park might be a form of exposure therapy. Go sit in the park for an hour with a book. Walk by the park on your way home
