I also like to narrate a weapon making contact but its blocked by either the armor or deflected by a weapon. makes the armor thats chose feel more significant

I try and describe either the opponent dodging or parrying the attack if they come close, or if they're out by a fair bit, I'll describe the strike glancing harmlessly off the scale/armour. It helps set the scene, and for bosses it helps build the atmosphere.

this is where unarmoured, light, medium and heavy come into play.
when your attack misses:
unarmoured: 100% it's because they dodged
light armour: 75% dodge 25% deflected.
medium armour: 50% dodge 50% deflected.
heavy armour: 25% dodge 75% deflected.
and having a shield improves deflect chances.

You're describing 3.5e. That's touch AC vs AC. If you hit high enough to touch the target while they attempt to dodge, but low enough to not hit the AC, you do end up connecting, but you don't get through their armor/natural armor.

I played a wolverine based character who had fast healing, and I flavored a lot of misses as minor hits that instantly healed.

You fail by 1 against a character with a shield? They deflected the blow! Fail by 4? A solid attack deflects off of their armor. Fail by 14? Mid attack… squirrel?!

In our game a party member was grappled and our cleric cast a protection spell on him. I attacked and the DM had the monster use the party member as a shield, negating the protection spell.

My rule of thumb is "The d20 reflects how much the world and target work with you to make an attack or check succeed or miss/fail." Their mod is their competence, and I never want to dismiss that 🥰 so, a miss or fail is never due to incompetence, but something just happened that they couldn't control or be blamed for.

My DM narrates the scene like an actual fight scene. Instead of "missing" the arrow just deflects off their armor or the bad guy blocks the monks strike or a spell scorches their chest plate but doesn't penetrate or whatever. Generally the "miss" is saved for a really low role. Say the DC is 18 a player gets an 8, it's narrated as the intended strike was misjudged and they missed entirely. On a string of really bad rolls it was the bad guy goading the character that frustrated them causing them to rush the strikes out of frustration.

I also sometimes use armor class literally, as in, your sword cut through the cloth, but the brigand had a chest plate under his shirt. Or, the hobgoblin pulled his hand up and his gauntlet deflected the dagger you threw.

To double down on this, have your players explain their intent, not just “I swing my sword at the goblin” - the more detail you can get them to add to their intent, the more cinematic you can narrate the miss, and the more epic you can make the hits/crits

I usually try to make it so if it’s within a certain amount, it hits but doesn’t get through armor or a shield or they barely dodged out of the way. Something the player COULDNT have stopped so it’s not as annoying cause they still did their best.

This definitely helps because so many heroes are well trains and experts with their attacks, so just missing doesn't always make sense. Having be related to the enemy or environmental factors is definitely a way more fun way to explain a "miss"

I quite often have enemies just block or parry the attack. Or for enemies wearing for example plate armor - let it do its job, take the hit and act like nothing happened. For some monsters - your sword just bounced off the monsters skin. You can suddenly make some enemies look way more badass, because you don't have to tell them whether that hit or not, just tell the effect of the hit

I do believe that I read somewhere that your turn is filled with various maneuvers and attacks that are implied, but the rolled attacks are just the ones where your character finds an opening to exploit.

I had a heavy armor tank of a character and i loved when my dm would describe the attacks not hitting as basically them just hitting the armor and it not mattering, it gave such a feeling of power and was exactly what the character was made to do

As a player and a DM, I only ever care if it hits or misses. 🤷 The descriptions takes me out of it at makes me loose track of whats going on.

Maybe people like you should stop saying "you need to stop saying" or "you're doing wrong" or any of those other super negative interactions. Instead, how about "here are some other ways to describe missing an attack in tabletop games". We aren't your players. And even if we were, saying "you need to stop saying" sounds aggressive and rude.
