Israeli Forces demolished the seed bank Palestinian Farmers used to save seeds, calling it a terrorist organization. Only 3% of Gaza’s farmland is left, so 40 American Farmers are saving the 9,000+ seeds that could vanish with it: This starts last year, when Israeli forces demolished the seed-multiplication unit called UAWC that Palestinian Farmers used in Hebron. The director said it was the only seed bank in the West Bank, holding more than 70 local varieties. Israel’s Defense Ministry designated UAWC and five other Palestinian NGOs as terrorist organizations, saying they operate for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Farmer groups worldwide condemned the demolition. Nine European countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden) independently reviewed the evidence and rejected the designation. Prior to it being bulldozed anyways, one variety survived and reached a Hudson Valley farmer. Simultaneously, Palestinian Farmers in New Jersey are creating a revolution. Lana Mustafa is a Palestinian American, began on a 50 × 100 ft home lot and has an heirloom okra plant that grows nine feet tall. She started a non-profit called Roots of Resilience (Roots_of_resilience_ ) to support build bridges for American farmers and ones in the West Bank. She needed more land, so she brought them to City Green Farm Eco-Center (@citygreen) where the plants produced more than 9,000 seeds in 2024 with the goal is to send the seeds home. The seeds are provided provided by Palestine Heirloom Seed Library (@paliheirloomseedlibrary) Make sure to support their work and support seed saving farmers.
