@drkhanamir: MUGHAL EMPIRE · 1653 · AGRA, INDIA 🇮🇳 By the reign of Shah Jahan, the Mughal Empire controlled much of the Indian subcontinent and possessed the resources, skilled labor and international connections required to build on an extraordinary scale. Mughal architecture combined Indian craftsmanship with Persian and Central Asian traditions of gardens, symmetry and imperial design. The Taj Mahal in Agra emerged from this powerful artistic culture after Mumtaz Mahal died in 1631. Shah Jahan commissioned a mausoleum on the bank of the Yamuna, and construction began in 1632. Marble carvers, stone-cutters, inlay specialists, painters, calligraphers and dome builders contributed to the complex. The Taj Mahal’s white marble was never intended to appear empty. Carved flowers, colored-stone inlay, calligraphy, water and changing daylight form a single architectural composition. The cenotaph visible in the upper chamber is symbolic; Mumtaz Mahal’s actual grave lies below. The Taj Mahal is therefore not a palace, but an imperial mausoleum created for remembrance. #TajMahal #ShahJahan #MumtazMahal #MughalArchitecture #AgraIndia
