DIY Cardboard Cat Shelters: Keeping Stray Cats Warm and Safe This Winter When the snow starts falling and temperatures plunge to just above freezing, stray cats often have nowhere to turn for warmth. In my small courtyard, I noticed how our neighborhood felines crowd into any available boxes -even a simple delivery box can be a lifeline in cold weather. With the old cat house no longer suitable for dropping temperatures, I decided to build a series of inexpensive cardboard shelters. After all, a bit of cardboard and some creativity can mean the difference between a chilly night and a cozy haven for these vulnerable creatures. My recent home renovation yielded a stack of cardboard I hadn't yet sold. Rather than letting it go to waste, I used it to create seven box-like shelters. To enhance insulation, I lined each one with a layer of adhesive-backed insulating cotton, which wards off moisture and holds in body heat. A simple wooden frame ensures the lightweight boxes won't blow away in gusty conditions. After cutting little 'doorways' in the front of each box, the cats wasted no time rushing inside. It's amazing how quickly they take to new hiding spots, instinctively seeking shelter from the elements. To further improve the design, I placed a small cloth curtain at each entrance to block wind and snow. Inside, every box features a soft cushion for added warmth. By midnight, I came out to check on my feline tenants. Sure enough, a few cats were sprawled comfortably on top of the boxes, while others had dozed off inside. There are still a few unoccupied shelters, but that will likely change as more cats discover these snug spaces. Not everything looks fancy, but effectiveness is what matters -and these boxes do the job. Winter can be harsh on stray animals, but a little effort can go a long way. If you have extra cardboard around, consider building a simple shelter for the cats in your neighborhood. It might not be pretty, but for the cats, it's a safe retreat from freezing nights. Keep an eye on your homemade cat colony; you might just find that these resilient furballs will repay your kindness by staying healthy and providing plenty of endearing moments. #StrayCats #CatShelter #StrayCat #CatCare #FeralCats #strayCatrescue #Cats #Catsoftiktok #CatShelter #TikTokCat #TikTokCats
