Well, here I am dressed as Loretta Lynn, holding a can of Crisco like I’m fixing to film one of her old commercials, and making a Shoney’s Strawberry Pie that doesn’t even call for Crisco! 😂🍓🥧 I found this recipe in an old cookbook and thought it looked a whole lot like the famous strawberry pie from Strawn’s here in Shreveport. So naturally, I had to try it! Now, whoever wrote these directions must have assumed we all knew what we were doing because the instructions basically said, “Cook until creamy.” MA’AM. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?! 😂 Do I boil it? Simmer it? How thick is creamy? It looked creamy before I ever turned the stove on! 1 seven up drink??? Excuse me sister, a can? a 2 liter? How many ounces ma’am??? 😂 So I did what any reasonable woman dressed as Loretta Lynn on Halloween would do. I guessed my way through the whole thing! 😂 I followed the recipe as best I could, except I used powdered sugar in the bottom of my baked pie crust instead of regular sugar. And let me tell y’all something. That pie was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! Kenny Shoney's Strawberry Pie 🍓 Bell’s Best Cookbook Ingredients 1 cup sugar 3 tablespoons cornstarch 1 Seven-Up soft drink (the original recipe doesn't specify the can size) Red food coloring 1 pint fresh strawberries, whole Whipped cream 1 baked pie crust A little sugar for the bottom of the crust (I used powdered sugar) Original Directions Combine sugar, cornstarch, and Seven-Up. Cook until creamy. Add red food coloring and let cool. Combine with 1 pint fresh whole strawberries. Pour into a baked pie crust with a little sugar sprinkled in the bottom. Top with whipped cream. My Note: Next time, cook the sugar, cornstarch, and Seven-Up over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture comes to a gentle boil and thickens noticeably. Let it bubble for about 1 minute, stirring, so the cornstarch can do its job. Then cool before combining with the strawberries and refrigerate until set. Recipe contributed by A. Ross, Jackson-South Council. #recipes #pie #dessert #desserts #strawberry
