Don't sleep on chain stretch if you ride a motorcycle. I had mine jump the sprocket once because I let it go too long. Not a fun morning.

I know motorcycle chains are different, but they are somewhat similar. At least one test that I know of showed that 75W-90 gear oil proved to be the best lubricant. Most motorcycle chains have either O-rings or X rings at all the links essentially sealing in the lubricant at each link. The gear oil reduces temperature and provides lubrication for the contact between the chain and the sprockets.

I sound so dumb saying this but I just realised that a bearing bears a load. The way you said it totally made that click for me ha

a bike chain will likely never have full fluid separation or hydrodynamic lubrication for the pins and barrels. Best chain lubricant i have seen is a solid film Henkel product. it must be baked on

Bearing or bushing? Or is bearing a generic term?

You are absolutely correct. After 30 years of Industrial Maintenance I can tell you that the correct oil is mandatory for proper roller chair maintenance and chain longevity. The stuff you spray on and sticks to the outside of the chain is a chain salesman’s bed friend .

So many people talk about a chain stretching. Thanks for telling them it’s not.

Would dry lube work? It would eliminate the problem of collecting grit and you can spray it on a rag and just run the chain through the soaked rag, or use the rag on the chain.

I have been part of a maintenance campaign at a grain elevator. Main drag conveyer. The chain was so stretched the tensioner was out of adjustment. The sprockets were worn to match the chain. Very budget conscious facility. Only choice was to remove 5 feet of chain. Good times

Removing a link once it’s stretched is not the solution. The chain will not engage properly with the chain ring or the gears on the rear wheel. The chain needs to be replaced at one percent wear

Lubricunt on the outside is essential as it goes through sprockets
