3. Flight Control Surfaces (Alternative Target) If the laser system is tracking from behind, it would target the T-tail assembly (the horizontal stabilizers at the top of the tail). The Vulnerability: The T-tail controls pitch (up and down movement). The actuator mechanisms and hydraulic lines that move these surfaces run through a relatively narrow tail structure. The Result: Severing the internal hydraulic lines or burning away the pivot joints of the elevators makes it impossible to pitch the nose up or down. A jet traveling at high speeds without pitch control will immediately enter a high-speed dive or aerodynamically tear itself apart.
