The pilot should have conducted a thorough pre-flight weather assessment, carefully reviewing the entire route for forecast icing, freezing levels, turbulence, precipitation and other hazardous conditions, as well as checking pilot weather reports and identifying suitable alternative routes and diversion airports. If there was a foreseeable risk of significant icing, the flight should have been delayed, rerouted or cancelled. Once airborne, any unexpected ice accumulation or worsening turbulence should have prompted an immediate reassessment and diversion rather than continuing into increasingly dangerous conditions. A pilot's first responsibility is the safety of everyone on board, and good airmanship means anticipating danger, making sound decisions and never taking unnecessary risks with passengers' lives.
