@houstonchronicle: Flowers and signs that read “Save this 1894 House: Honk” and “History lives here” lined the fence at 2000 Smith Street, where demolition began Friday on Midtown’s historic Kirby Mansion. ⠀ After a significant chunk of the Tudor Revival house had been razed, city officials discovered the work started without the required permit. A stop-work order was issued Friday, but according to preservationists at Sunday's protest, developers obtained the permit later that day. ⠀ Click the link in our bio for more. ⠀ 📷️: Elizabeth Conley / Houston Chronicle photographer ✍️: Tanya Babbar / Houston Chronicle reporter
It’s sad but Houston has no sense of Historical Pride

They paved paradise, and put up a parking lot. This is wild because it’s literally a block from my apartment and I just saw it when I went out today. I had no idea the history around me and it’s sad to see it all destroyed. Can’t get it back. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot

John Henry Kirby was a racist and founded/funded racist organizations. He decimated areas of Southern US forests that were never restored. A century later and his harm still lingers. Glad the house is gone

And they still were able to get a permit and resume demolition in the end. I hate Houston.
