@theausinstitute: In the recent Senate Estimates Michelle Bullock, Governor of the Reserve Bank, said she is "not worried" about the rapid rise in unemployment from 4.1% to 4.7% this year that has led to about an extra 100,000 unemployed Australians in our country. That is shameful. See more from Chief Economist Greg Jericho on The Point website!
It is freaking weird that in order for our economy to fix itself it needs more people to be unemployed

So its more important to have people on Centrelink & living in poverty than have a working society paying taxes

Unemployment is even worse than that.
Unemployment rate is based on working population (either employed or unemployed), if you increase Australia’s overall population (as we do) you artificially push down unemployment rate.
The data used to determine size of working population is from ABS survey sent to 24,000 homes. Homeless people are ineligible for survey and now marked as “not in labor force” rather than “unemployed” despite being employable. This again artificially pushes down unemployment rate while hiding unemployment growth.

The question was around the risk of heading towards a recession. And Bullock’s answer was that they’re not concerned that the current increase in unemployment will lead to that

Excuse my ignorance but aren’t businesses calling out for employees? I know my workplace is (retail). Our economy is cooked. It’s like half the population are wealthy (due to their properties in recent decades) and the other half are poor

People don’t understand how highly destructive inflation is. Getting it under control is essential to Australia’s future. Unemployment is still historically low.

You need people to be unemployed to reduce inflation- but Centrelink is $400 a week and rent is double that, food is double that, bills, car bills, medical bills, dental ect. People are dying and in pain and no one cares

Interest rate are too concentrated on a small section of the population these days. If you need to take money out of the economy to reduce demand, surely a floating addition to the Medicare levy would have the same effect but spread more evenly. Unless, higher unemployment is the goal to suppress already pitiful wages. RBA business bias strikes again.
