In the book it was meant to be obvious that he's crazy. Scorsese wanted it to be more ambiguous to help the mystery.

it's purposely written to work both ways. 1 where he's a marshall trying to uncover what's been going on and 2 where he's an inmate. that's why it's such a good movie because it's not 100% determined and leaves it to the viewer to decide

Your theory breaks down. Here’s why: If Mark Ruffalo is a detective, then why didn’t they do the same gas lighting to him? Or if he’s a doctor in the institution, then Leo Dicaprio wouldn’t have worked with him at the start. He’d be working on his own.

He isn’t crazy , that’s the whole point of the movie.. people are deemed as unreliable and are discredited if they’re labeled “crazy” and this is what happens to him..

what about his partner then? why would he be in on it? why would his partner want to trick him into beliving he is working there and tracking him into beeing Andrew?

This is a perfect conspiracy theory, because for it to work you must start with the solution and only look at the facts that lead you to it while ignoring all facts that point towards the opposite direction. You have to ignore quite a big part of the movie for this to make sense but if you just cut out the examples that support the theory you can trick the viewer into thinking this makes total sense

HelloOhNurse | Truth, RN :
Bro, this is a bad theory. Andrew Laeddis was real. Teddy Daniels was the identity he created to escape what he had done. The doctors were playing along with his delusion to help him accept reality and avoid a lobotomy. The boat ride was likely staged as part of that treatment, and the storm doesn’t prove otherwise. If we’re going to believe the woman in the cave was real, then we’d also have to believe Chuck was actually lying dead on the rocks. Both were hallucinations. The woman who wrote “RUN” knew who Andrew was and understood what the doctors were doing. And the cigarettes and pills didn’t suddenly make him delusional. He’d been a patient for two years. The ending literally tells us he knows who he is. “Which would be worse: to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?” He wasn’t choosing to remain Teddy because he believed he was Teddy. He was choosing the lobotomy because he couldn’t bear living as Andrew. That’s the tragedy of the entire movie.
