@child_of_an_addict: I think one of the hardest things about growing up without the love and security you desperately needed is realizing that becoming an adult doesn’t magically make that little girl inside you feel safe. She’s still very much there and traumatized. And when the abandonment continues into adulthood, it becomes even harder to convince yourself that you aren’t to blame… hard to love…and the people you love aren’t going anywhere. But they do. They always do. I live so much of my life in “what if.” What if something happens? What if they leave? What if I lose everything I’ve worked so hard to build? It’s exhausting being terrified of a life you desperately want to enjoy. I don’t want to spend my whole life surviving things that haven’t happened. Fight or flight. It’s making me physically ill. want to LIVE. I want to feel safe. I want to believe that good things can happen without something terrible following them. That’s not too much to ask. And more than anything, I want my daughters to grow up knowing that they never have to earn my love, beg for my attention, or wonder if they’re worth fighting for. EVER. They will experience unconditional love and I will experience it through them for the first time. ❤️ I can’t change the childhood I had or the people who’ve walked away… and no I won’t ever get all the answers I wish I had. But I do get to control the childhood they get to remember… And maybe somewhere along the way, while I’m teaching them what unconditional love feels like, I’ll finally learn how to accept it for myself, too.
