it's a microaggreasion tbh you sound very kiwi to me - I'm confident if you were white they wouldn't have noticed. I'm Māori and people have questioned my accent because they have a stereotype of how we are supposed to sound. and that "huh" was very Māori to me 😅

I’ve gotten this multiple times, I came here when I was 3 from Zim. Maybe it’s because I’m bilingual and grew up consuming media from other countries. But also I think sometimes they don’t expect me to have a kiwi accent…. Girl idk
