President Donald Trump said Monday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not face arrest during his planned visit to New York in September, responding to recent comments from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Netanyahu is expected to travel to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. Mamdani recently said the city’s legal team has been exploring whether an arrest would be possible in light of the International Criminal Court’s ICC warrant against the Israeli leader. Speaking on The New York Times’ “The Interview” podcast, Mamdani said he believes Netanyahu should stand trial in The Hague, arguing that the ICC’s allegations warrant accountability. Trump rejected that idea in a Truth Social post, declaring that Netanyahu “will not be arrested” while visiting the United States. The president instead criticized Iran’s leadership, accusing the Iranian government of years of violence and arguing that its leaders—not Netanyahu—should be held responsible. The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024, accusing him of war crimes and crimes against humanity tied to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza following Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel. The court alleges offenses including using starvation as a method of warfare and intentionally targeting civilians. Israel has strongly denied the allegations. Netanyahu’s office also dismissed both the ICC warrant and Mamdani’s comments, calling the court illegitimate and arguing it has no authority over Israeli or American officials. In a statement posted on X, the prime minister’s office criticized Mamdani, accusing him of focusing on political attacks instead of issues facing New York City.#fyp #viral
