Senior Minister K Shanmugam and Workers' Party (WP) MP Fadli Fawzi sparred in Parliament on Nov. 4 over Singapore's recent meeting with Israeli officials and whether concerns over illegal West Bank settlements were raised. The meeting was reported by Israeli media outlet Haaretz, which also alleged that an Israeli delegation discussed the death penalty with Singaporean officials. Responding in Parliament, Shanmugam emphasised that ministers are elected to safeguard Singapore's national interests first and foremost.

"And because we are a small country, it is important for us that international law be upheld, which doesn't mean repeating it at every meeting necessarily," Shanmugam said. "These things are dealt with with common sense and skill. If a member believes that meetings with Israel on the West Bank settler issue, every meeting should raise those issues, put it on an adjournment motion and we can debate it." #mothershipparliament
