You have to look at individual performances as well, and Baleba gave United plenty of reasons to be encouraged. But the other player I’d like to see alongside him is Kobbie Mainoo. For me, Kobbie is the one who can come into that midfield and change the balance. He gives you composure, intelligence, ball retention and the ability to play through pressure. He’s not just someone who keeps possession; he knows when to turn, when to carry the ball and when to move the team forward. I actually think Mainoo and Baleba could become a very balanced partnership. Baleba gives you the physical presence and defensive protection, while Kobbie gives you the control and creativity. And that’s where Santos could find himself under pressure. If Carrick wants a midfield that can win battles, control possession and move the ball forward, I would seriously consider those two together. Then there’s Youri Tielemans. He’s a good midfielder, but I don’t think he can simply walk back into this team anymore. If Mainoo and Baleba establish that partnership, Tielemans will have a serious fight on his hands to get his starting place back. United have been looking for a balanced midfield for years.
