@ancient.frontier: For thousands of years, Troy was remembered as the city of legendary warriors, an extraordinary war and the mysterious Trojan Horse. But what if the city from one of history's greatest legends was actually real? 🏛️⚔️ Located in modern-day Turkey, Ancient Troy was a powerful Bronze Age settlement that became immortal through Greek mythology and the legendary Trojan War. According to Homer's Iliad, the Greeks besieged Troy after Paris, a Trojan prince, took Helen of Sparta to the city. The conflict became associated with legendary heroes such as Achilles, Hector, Agamemnon and Odysseus. For centuries, historians debated whether Troy had ever existed. Then, during the 19th century, archaeological excavations at Hisarlik revealed the remains of an ancient city with multiple layers of settlement, massive defensive walls and evidence of destruction. The discovery confirmed that Troy was a real ancient city, although the historical accuracy of Homer's Trojan War and the famous Trojan Horse remains uncertain. Long before the rise of Classical Ancient Greece, Alexander the Great and the Roman Empire, Troy had already experienced centuries of prosperity, conflict and destruction. From Ancient Troy, the Trojan War and Greek mythology to Achilles, Hector, Homer, the Bronze Age Collapse and archaeological discoveries, its story remains one of the most fascinating mysteries of Ancient History. The legendary heroes may belong to mythology. The famous wooden horse may never have existed. But the city of Troy was real. 🌍⏳ And beneath the ruins of modern Turkey, archaeologists uncovered the remains of a civilization once believed by many to be nothing more than a legend. #ancienthistory #ancientgreece #troy #iliad #homer
