The rumors stem from a misinterpretation of the U.S. military's FORTRESS America initiative announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, which directs military bases to maintain 90 days of independent supplies for resilience against external threats. Social media posts falsely transformed this internal defense-readiness policy into a mandatory nationwide civilian blackout. Standard emergency preparedness advice remains unchanged, with authorities like Ready.gov recommending basic supplies for short-term, localized disruptions.
