"I shall deliver from purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary." On All Souls' Day, this old promise hits differently. 📿 It's one of the 15 Rosary Promises. They come to us through Alan de la Roche (c. 1428–1475), a Breton Dominican preacher, often called Blessed Alan, who spent his life restoring the Rosary across France, Flanders, and the Netherlands. Around 1470 he founded a Rosary confraternity that helped spread the prayer across Europe. Tradition says Our Lady gave these promises to St. Dominic and to Alan. A few more: those who faithfully pray the Rosary "shall receive signal graces," it "shall be a powerful armor against hell," and those who spread it "shall be aided by me in their necessities." An honest note: the Church has never formally ruled on these promises. They're a beloved private devotion, not doctrine, and scholars debate how much of Alan's writings is really his. But the Rosary itself is warmly encouraged by popes, and praying for the dead is Church teaching. 🙏 Who will you offer a Rosary for this week? 📷 Slide 1: original artwork made for this account.
