@youmeusalways: my grandma told me something similar when i was a teenager, just less scientific. she said "the first year is fireworks, baby. you find out what it is after the fireworks." i thought about that a lot when i hit the one year mark with my girlfriend. the nervous, can't eat, checking my phone every minute feeling had faded months before. and i got scared for a second that maybe it meant something was wrong. but then i noticed what replaced it. she knows when i've had a bad day before i say anything. we have our own dumb language. i can sit in silence with her for hours. it's not fireworks anymore. it's something warmer. now we're coming up on two years, and every month past that line feels less like luck and more like proof.
