All Souls' Day is the day the Catholic Church refuses to let go of her dead. A few things most people never learned: Purgatory is not punishment without hope. The Catechism calls every soul there assured of eternal salvation. A Priests can celebrate 3 Masses on this one day, a privilege granted during World War I when Europe was filled with graves. For 8 days, the Church offers a plenary indulgence for a soul in purgatory, one per day, just for visiting a cemetery and praying. Love does not end at a graveside. It still has work to do.
