Newborns are WEIRD 😂 And I say that with love as a pediatrician and a mom. There are so many things babies do in those first few weeks that can look completely bizarre (and sometimes a little alarming) but really are normal newborn behavior. Their eyes cross. Their eye muscles are still learning to work together, so occasional crossing can be normal in the first few months. Their whole body suddenly startles. That’s the Moro reflex, a normal newborn reflex that they eventually outgrow. Their breathing speeds up, slows down, and pauses! Newborn breathing can be irregular, with brief pauses followed by faster breaths. This is called periodic breathing. They sneeze constantly. Sneezing is a normal reflex that helps clear their tiny nasal passages, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re sick. They make SO much noise while they sleep. Newborns spend lots of time in active sleep, so grunting, squeaking, moving, and making faces can all happen. They get hiccups ALL the time. Their diaphragm and nervous system are still maturing, and frequent hiccups are very common. They grunt, strain, and turn bright red to poop. They’re still learning how to coordinate pushing with relaxing their pelvic floor. If the poop is soft, all that drama can be totally normal. Of course, “newborns are weird” doesn’t mean everything is normal. If your baby is struggling to breathe, turning blue, has a fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, is difficult to wake, isn’t feeding normally, or something just doesn’t seem right, call your pediatrician. What’s the weirdest thing YOUR newborn did that nobody warned you about? 👇 Video from @Dan Aguinaga #motherhood #pediatrician #parenting
