How do you thank the people who have loved your child when she cannot tell them in words what they mean to her? Lola is non-verbal, but she has never needed words for us to see how deeply she loves the people at her school. She absolutely adores them—and especially Faye, who has been by her side for the past three years. Faye, you took the time to truly learn Lola. You understood her expressions, her sounds, her routines and all the little ways she communicates. You knew when she needed reassurance, when she wanted to laugh and how to make her feel safe and happy. The bond you share with her is something we will carry with us forever. This week, her incredible specialist SEN school gave her the most beautiful leaving assembly. Her teacher became too emotional to finish the farewell speech. Then, when we thought our hearts couldn’t take any more, the entire staff formed a guard of honour and cheered our girl as she left school for the final time. I don’t think any of you will ever fully understand what that meant to her mum and me. To know that our non-verbal daughter was not simply cared for, but truly known, understood, celebrated and loved, is a gift beyond words. To Faye, every teacher, every teaching assistant, every therapist and every member of staff—you didn’t simply teach Lola. You gave her a place where she belonged. You have touched our lives and completely captured our hearts. Thank you for loving our girl. Thank you for seeing her. Thank you for giving her a goodbye we will never forget.
