for anyone who doesn’t know who elijah mcclain is he was a 23 year old aurora colorado who was stopped by police while walking home in august 2019. police were called after a passerby reported him as suspicious for wearing a ski mask (which he wore because he was anemic & often cold) & swinging his arms. no crime had been reported & the caller did not report seeing a weapon or being threatened. officers tackled him, placed him in neck restraints & knelt on his body. even after he was handcuffed & on the ground officers continued applying force. he was apologizing, crying out in pain, puking, & struggling to breathe. paramedics then injected him w 500 mg of ketamine without adequately evaluating him first resulting in an excessive dose. he suffered cardiac arrest & died days later.

i remember hearing about this case for the first time, and hearing the audio from the body cam footage. i cried so hard. i cannot imagine how his family felt, knowing they had a literal angel as flesh and blood, and finding out he died in such a horrific manner. when his community came together and showed videos and pictures of how much joy he brought those around him, it makes me so angry that he is no longer here. that it was only after he passed that the whole world began to know how wonderful he is. all i can hope is that he is resting well
