@useinkling: midterm 2 is next week and half the points are just reading the reagent search "inkling orgo" on the App Store or go to tryinkling.app how to read reagents for orgo 1 midterm 2, all on one page. the reagent tells you the mechanism before you draw anything. a strong, small base like NaOEt, NaOMe or NaOH gives E2 on a 2° or 3° carbon (the more substituted alkene, Zaitsev) and SN2 on a 1°. a strong, bulky base like KOtBu gives E2 and the less substituted alkene (Hofmann). a good nucleophile that is a weak base, like NaCN, NaN3, NaSH or NaI in DMSO or acetone, gives SN2 with inversion. water or an alcohol with no heat on a 3° carbon is SN1, and the same weak base with heat tips it to E1. H2SO4 or H3PO4 with heat on an alcohol makes water leave, then E1 to the most substituted alkene. for alkenes, HBr or HCl is Markovnikov (the carbocation can shift), HBr with peroxides (ROOR) is a radical reaction so it is anti-Markovnikov, water with a little H2SO4 is a Markovnikov alcohol, BH3·THF then H2O2 and NaOH is anti-Markovnikov and syn with no carbocation, Br2 in CH2Cl2 gives the anti dibromide through a bromonium, and Br2 with water gives a halohydrin with OH on the more substituted carbon. always check if the carbon is 1°, 2° or 3° first. today's in-app quiz (body spray) uses the H2SO4 + heat row which row do you always mix up? 👇 #ochem #organicchemistry #orgo #chemistry #examprep
