@useinkling: what does acid do to the fresh smell in your body spray? 👇 today's quiz in the app is on this molecule: search "inkling orgo" on the App Store or go to tryinkling.app E1 dehydration of a 3° alcohol with H2SO4 and heat, for orgo 1. the molecule is dihydromyrcenol, the fresh note in lots of body sprays. step 1, classify the carbon the OH sits on: count the carbons attached to it. one carbon is 1°, two is 2°, three is 3°. here the OH carbon touches two CH3 groups and the chain, so it is a 3° carbon. step 2, why E1 and not E2: there is no strong base, just H2SO4 and heat, so the OH gets protonated first, turning a bad leaving group (OH) into a good one (water). water leaves first, on its own, and that slow step leaves a 3° carbocation, which is the stable kind because three alkyl groups share the positive charge. only after that does a neighbouring H come off to make the C=C. that two-step order (leave first, then lose an H) is what makes it E1, and it is why 3° alcohols dehydrate easily with acid while 1° alcohols do not go through a carbocation. step 3, the alkene: an H leaves from a carbon next to the carbocation, and here there are two kinds of neighbours to pull it from, so two different alkenes are possible, A and B on slide 4. which of the two is major here is the whole question of today's quiz, and the quiz asks you to explain why, not just pick. A or B? comment before you open the quiz 👇 #ochem #organicchemistry #chemtok #chemistry #studytok

inkling: orgo & chem help :
the only thing separating A and B is which neighbor gives up its H. which one are you leaning toward, and what's your reason? 🧴
