D looks like the easy first pick. comment your order before you swipe 👇 search "inkling orgo" on the App Store or go to tryinkling.app carbocation stability for orgo 1: rank A isopropyl cation, B 2-methylbut-3-en-2-yl cation (a tertiary cation with a C=C next to the + carbon), C propyl cation and D tert-butyl cation, most stable first. the order is B, then D, then A, then C. the rule is that more alkyl groups on the + carbon means a more stable carbocation, so 3° beats 2° beats 1°. that is hyperconjugation: the C-H and C-C bonds next to the empty p orbital donate electron density into it, and each carbon touching the + gives a little more. B beats D because the C=C right next to the + is allylic: the + is shared over two carbons by resonance, so a 3° allylic cation beats a plain 3° one. A is 2° with two carbons, and C is 1° with only one carbon, so a propyl cation almost never forms on its own. three traps on slide 3: count the carbons touching the + and not the hydrogens, an allylic C=C next to the + beats the same carbon without one, and the + can move. a 2° carbocation next to a 3° carbon will shift an H (hydride shift) or a CH3 (methyl shift) to become 3°, so the product is not always where the + started. this is why carbocation stability decides SN1 and E1 and why Markovnikov addition puts the + on the more substituted carbon. bonus problem E on the last slide: which one shifts, an H or a CH3? answer in the comments 👀 was B the one that surprised you, or did you keep it 3° vs 3°? tell me why in the comments 👇 #ochem #organicchemistry #carbocation #studytok #premed
