Jurors in the trial over a police officer's response to the Uvalde, Texas, school shooting were instructed to disregard the testimony of a former teacher whose testimony about the gunman's location prompted complaints from the defense about prosecutors not disclosing her statements before trial. The witness said things to prosecutors that she didn’t tell police in her initial interview. Judge Sid Harle in Texas' 4th Judicial Region told the witness, Stephanie Hale, that her testimony will be stricken from the trial record, "but I want to emphasize to you, you did absolutely nothing wrong." "It is not on you," Harle told Hale. The judge recalled his own traumatic experience when a drunken driver struck him and his wife and the judge was hospitalized for two months. "Apparently, they almost lost me in the emergency room, but revived me. And I remember that event very clearly, that truck coming at us and trying to get out of the way, but every time I think about it, it's a little different, and that's because of stress and trauma," Harle said. "So nothing about this is on you," the judge continued. "We appreciate your bravery that day, and we appreciate your testimony and being brave enough to come in here, and you are excused with our thanks. Take care." Harle is presiding over the trial of Adrian Gonzales, a former police officer with the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District who was at Robb Elementary School on May 24, 2022, when an 18-year-old gunman killed 19 children and two adults. The trial was moved to Nueces County in Corpus Christie because of the extensive publicty in Uvalde County surrounding the case. Gonzales is charged with 29 counts of child endangerment or abandonment for his slow response. Harle has been a judge for nearly 40 years. He’s serving his third term as presiding judge after Gov. Greg Abbott appointed him again in September 2025. He previously was a judge in Texas’ 226th Judicial District Court in Bexar County for 30 years. Harle has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and he earned his juris doctor from St. Mary’s University School of Law.
