FLORIDA LEARJET TRAGEDY: WHAT THE WEATHER DATA REVEALS Nine people tragically lost their lives Sunday, November 1, when a Learjet 60 (N722BD) crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida, while traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas. An extraordinary meteorological analysis by Matthew Cappucci for MyRadar Weather Radar illustrates the rapidly changing atmospheric conditions the aircraft encountered shortly before the crash. According to Cappucci’s analysis, a developing thunderstorm near Royal Palm Beach grew from approximately 33,000 feet tall at 12:36 p.m. to 48,300 feet by 12:56 p.m. That’s more than 15,000 feet of vertical development in just 20 minutes, indicating powerful thunderstorm updrafts. As the aircraft approached the storm around 12:47–12:48 p.m. EST, the crew reported light clear icing and moderate turbulence. Shortly afterward, they reported increasing precipitation and requested a climb from 35,000 to 37,000 feet. Moments later, the aircraft entered an extraordinarily rapid descent. Flight-tracking data recorded a descent rate exceeding 32,000 feet per minute, with the last reported altitude approximately 8,750 feet. Rapidly developing thunderstorms can produce intense turbulence, dangerous icing conditions, and powerful vertical air currents, even at altitudes where these hazards may be unexpected. IMPORTANT: Although the available weather data raise significant questions about the storm’s possible role, the cause of this tragedy has NOT been determined. The NTSB will investigate weather conditions, aircraft performance, and other potential contributing factors. My deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of all nine people who lost their lives. #Florida #AviationSafety #SevereWeather #Meteorology #aviationnews
