@howyourhouseworks.au: Switching on your range hood isn't enough 🔥👀 Every stir-fry sends oil up with the steam, and the metal filter catches it, layer on layer. As the filter clogs, the fan pulls less, and manufacturers warn that grease built up in the filter is a fire risk. In one Berkeley Lab test, hoods on low caught as little as 3% of the fine smoke from a stir-fry on the front burner (16 to 70% on high, still on the front burner), while on a back burner, fully under the hood, most of it got caught, even on low. Keep using your hood, just make it work: every 4 weeks, switch the hood off, let it cool and wash the metal filter in hot soapy water or the dishwasher if your manual allows it (never wash a charcoal filter). Cook on the back burners with the fan on high, from 5 minutes before you start to about 15 minutes after. London Fire Brigade says around 60% of home fires start in the kitchen. If a pan ever catches fire, never use water: slide a lid over it and turn off the heat, and if it's not out, get out and call for help. #rangehood #kitchentips #cleaningtips #firesafety #howthingswork
