In a study of 656 homes, the most common were mycobacteria (cousins of the TB germ, not TB and not catching), and in an earlier study many shower heads held over 100 times more of them than the water. They resist chlorine better than other bacteria, so they did best on chlorinated town water, though chlorine still keeps tap water safe to drink. For most healthy people they're harmless, but they can infect people with weak lungs or weak immune systems.
