A Palestinian home became Tel Aviv University's faculty club. Its owner, Ibrahim Abu Kheel, promised peace to his Jewish neighbors. He kept his word. His village was emptied anyway. The village was al-Shaykh Muwannis, on a hill above the al-Auja River, where families grew oranges and grain. In January 1948, Ibrahim and leaders of nearby villages met the Haganah, the main Zionist militia, in Petah Tikva. They promised to keep outside Arab fighters away, and they kept that promise. Most families stayed home, trusting the deal. In March 1948, gunmen from Lehi, another Zionist group, seized 5 villagers who had gone out looking for food and held them for 11 days. In those days, historian Shlomo Sand writes, the Haganah itself surrounded the village. No one could reach the fields. Anyone who left could not come back. Without fuel for the generators, the water ran short. At the end of March, Sand writes, the last families walked north on a dirt road. The village's people became refugees, from Tulkarm to Gaza. The last to leave was Ibrahim. Sand writes that he trusted his Jewish friends to the end. Soon, Jewish immigrants moved into the empty homes. In 1964, Tel Aviv University opened its campus on the village land, and Ibrahim's house, the Green House, became the faculty club. In 2006, historian Ilan Pappe described the club's menu: it said the house had belonged to a rich man called Shaykh Munis. Pappe says that rich man was made up. Shaykh Munis is the village's name. That year, a visitor filmed the plaque at the door and noted that it does not mention the Palestinian house it renovated. The house survived. His name was left off it.
