Day three back to school after summer break. For a little back story I arrived to class 10 minutes early. There were roughly about 4-5 students in the class. Majority of the seats were open THERE IS NO ASSIGNED SEATING. I decided to sit in the very front which is across from the professors desk. After sitting down and getting settled. The professor turns to me and says “you might want to sit somewhere else, or your “USUAL” seat, students get territorial over their seats” The student to the left of me who is also sitting in the front said can I sit here, and the professor said no your fine. I did not process what I was being told to do. Once again they iterate to chose a different seat. I pack my things and move to the seats behind. Once I sat, I began to become emotional considering the history of black people being told to move to the back of the bus. Being segregated. I am the only black woman in my class. I never thought anyone or therefore a professor, would say this to me especially. I was very distraught. I left class right at 9am when class started. For over 40 minutes not knowing what to do, and crying my eyes out till there were bloodshot red. I called my mom not being able to speak or get my words out to tell her what I was told. My mom spoke with the professor briefly. After being able to speak without crying this is our conversation. I was never given a proper apology. Instead I was being manipulated into believing if I chose a seat there would be repercussions, to fear for my safety, and expect my classmates to treat me differently. The professor also suggested I ask my classmates prior If I can sit in their seat. Even though there are no assigned seats. Instead of addressing the class and telling everyone you can chose whichever seat you chose and we should not treat or have someone be concerned for their safety. I have to be told individually my actions will have consequences. If you want a seat in the front come to class early!!! Was the issue because I chose to sit in the very front? What if I had chose to sit in the back on the other side of the room, would that have been a problem? #discriminationawareness #dentalhygienist #fypppppppppppppppp
