@thelisakays: I guess TikTok is never going to let me caption or edit longer videos again. Would not have chosen this caption font if it were up to me. (Not medical advice. Psychoeducational only.) #MentalHealth #couplestherapy #narcissisticabuserecovery #overthinking #women
The first thing that comes to mind for me is the phrase “feeling safe.” Not sure if this can be considered a euphemism though. For ex I say I don’t feel safe bringing up hard topics with my husband because he responds with rage or freezing me out. He says he doesn’t feel safe to bring things up with me because I don’t hear him, but it’s actually because his communication skills and ability to sit in discomfort are so terrible. Any discussion feels like a threat to him. Then the discussion in couples therapy becomes about how I can be softer and smaller to make him feel safe, and then how I can create my own internal safety for myself? These are not the same thing AND somehow the responsibility is mine for both?? Meanwhile he feels justified in doing the same old bullshit.

This is a great point. Off the top of my head, I think maybe “flooded” can sometimes be a euphemism for raging.

Addiction recovery does this a lot.

this happens in the legal field a lot. courts define things as "reasonable" in order to continue to apply their own biases while maintaining a veil of dispassion. which is why a woman making allegations of DV is more likely to lose custody.

Two profs ruined me: Adam Davis in English and Glenda Clyde in Comm. Both taught me enormous amounts about implicit versus explicit meaning, encoding versus decoding meaning, and the psychology of semantics in general. (I didn’t learn much about the psychology of anything useful in the psych department, unfortunately, although Costa’s lectures on serial killers were invariably interesting and entertaining)

I heard ‘euthanization’ initially and I thought ‘oh dear I knew CT was problematic but’ 😂😅

I swear this is so accurate and so upsetting. And excellent observation. I feel this was true with my family in childhood, at work, in therapy, some relationships, it’s rampant! 😳 I’m now self installing a euphemism detector, feels like it could be a good signpost

There’s a song I like called “Nothing for Free” that has the phrase “Taking arms is taking heads.” That seems to call out a euphemism…though not for therapy.

When they talk about men having sec with ‘underage women’. They’re children. You’re talking about men graping children.
