Last fall, when Roman was 3, he asked me a question I didn’t quite know how to answer. “How come there’s nobody here to cheer for me?” I was there. But I was coaching his team, and he’d started noticing that his teammates had family and friends cheering them on from the sidelines. He wanted that, too. A few days later, our neighbors, Mr. Bruce and Ms. Maryann, surprised us by coming to his game. They’d asked for his schedule but hadn’t said they were coming, and at the time, they knew nothing about the conversation Roman and I had just had. At the very next game, Mr. Bruce’s sister, Ms. Marsha, joined them. And when soccer season ended, their support didn’t. They came to his basketball games, then his T-ball games, and between those seasons were the front porch conversations, visits, and afternoons together that brought them closer to Roman far beyond the sidelines. By the time soccer came around again this fall, Roman was 4, and those familiar faces had become part of so much more than his sports seasons. When I asked whether he wanted me to coach again, he immediately said yes. I reminded him that meant I couldn’t be on the sideline cheering for him. “Well, that’s okay, Mama. My neighbors will always come, cause them really love me!” This weekend, we arrived at his soccer game without knowing whether any of them could make it. But Mr. Bruce, Ms. Maryann, and Ms. Marsha were already there waiting for us, and Roman ran straight into their arms. A year ago, they came to cheer for my boy without knowing how much he needed them. Since then, they’ve given him so much more than their Saturdays. They’ve given him their time, their attention, and a place in their lives that has grown with every season. And somewhere between that first soccer game and this one, Roman found his own answer to the question he’d asked me a year ago. Not because anyone promised they’d always be there, but because, through every season and all the moments in between, they’ve shown him how much he’s loved. And this weekend, there they were again, waiting just for him. 💙 #RomanAce1
