@science.nature: Eva Longoria points to mentoring someone, helping a small business and sharing what you know as ways to give back, even as she puts a $50 million award from Jeff Bezos toward education and Latina entrepreneurs. “What I’ve learned is that impact doesn’t come from how much money you have, it comes from how you show up,” the Desperate Housewives actress said. Longoria received the Courage and Civility Award alongside retired Navy Adm. Bill McRaven. They received $50 million each. Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos launched the award in 2021; other recipients have included Van Jones, José Andrés and Dolly Parton. For Longoria, the funding has meant more resources for work she was already doing. She started the Eva Longoria Foundation in 2012 to help Latinas in the U.S. access education and entrepreneurial opportunities. She also runs Eva’s Heroes, which supports young adults with intellectual special needs, and she's mentoring small-business owners through a Lenovo partnership. Longoria said the award has helped her support Latina entrepreneurs, broaden access to education and fund community organizations. Receiving it also made her feel a greater responsibility to be deliberate about her advocacy. “Receiving that support was incredibly meaningful, not just because of the scale of the gift, but because it represented trust and responsibility,” she said. Her advice to people without that kind of funding centers on being someone others can turn to. “And I think that’s really what’s missing for a lot of people. They don’t have someone in their corner.” Liz Baker, CEO of Greater Good Charities, offered a practical starting point for people who can give time. Her organization has delivered more than $1 billion in assistance across 121 countries since 2006. “Even if you’re like, I have one hour a week to solve this problem in my community that I care about,” Baker said. “Figure out how to do that. Most local nonprofits need help.”
