Charles Barkley spoke out in support of traditional parenting and discipline during an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, pushing back against the idea that parents should never raise their voices at their children. “People talking about you can’t yell at your kids. Yes, hell you can yell at your kids,” Barkley said, adding that parents will “whoop their a– too.” The 63-year-old Basketball Hall of Famer, who regularly provides analysis during March Madness, connected his frustration to what he sees as a growing lack of accountability among younger athletes. He complained that coaches “can’t even yell at them anymore” either. However, Barkley emphasized that he was advocating discipline rather than cruelty. “I’m not going around telling people to beat their kids, but I think if you don’t spank your kids and discipline them, they turn into some of these brats that we got today,” he said. He continued, “I’m not here for child ab*se, but how are kids gonna know they’re doing something wrong? First of all, you can’t rationalize with kids, they’re dumber than rocks.” His remarks stand in contrast to guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which discourages spanking because research has associated physical punishment with increased aggression and other negative outcomes. Barkley has not publicly retracted his statements, maintaining his position on the importance of parental authority and holding children accountable for their behavior.
