@the0tricality: Midnight (written, directed, composed, and choreographed by Todrick Hall) has one of the most talented casts I’ve ever seen Off-Broadway, incredible production value, and a score I was still humming on the way home. But I also left with a lot of conflicting feelings and discomfort over the central romance that it was elevating as timeless. I paid for my own ticket and these are my honest thoughts. As referenced in the video, I implore you to watch @Marquise Davon’s informed takes on the show and on the subject of lynching plays. Please note that this review contains major spoilers necessary to include for the sake of conversation. #midnightmusical #todrickhall #offbroadway #theatrereview #nyctheatre

thank you. from my perspective it's completely tone deaf. but todrick is known to do that and he loves controversy. when it comes to this subject matter it should always be taken seriously and not sugar coated or made into some kind of kink fantasy played out in real life. the show makes me sick. thank you for this honest review. and I recommend to you and anyone else wanting to support black stories, go watch "wanted" at the jones theater!

I think the musical doesn’t make it entirely clear and that blurring makes it hard for an audience to absorb but Richard does not own Rail. Rail is owned by the family headed by Sylvester and including Charlotte, Scarlet and Violet. Richard is a white neighbor and privileged, and that power imbalance is ostensible. When Richard meets Rail, he eventually hires him as a contract worker and pays him to help him build his home. When Richard is engaged to Scarlett later on, it does create an indirect link where Richard would technically own Rail by marriage, so that’s blurry too. The musical doesn’t really do a great job delineating this, but I’m not sure it matters. It is problematic, troubling and makes one question the premise and foundation of the central romance.
