It's the end of an era as Channel 4 has announced that Married At First Sight UK has been cancelled after 10 years on screen. The decision follows an extensive independent review into contestant welfare, commissioned after serious allegations were raised against a small number of former contributors. While the review found no breach of Ofcom's Broadcasting Code, it highlighted areas where welfare protocols could be strengthened. Channel 4 boss Priya Dogra said the level of supervision needed to make future series possible would fundamentally change the show's format, adding that the programme had also 'run its course'. Its budget will now be redirected towards new television projects. In a statement, Priya Dogra said: “MAFS UK has been enjoyed by millions of viewers... but considering [the recommendations'] wholesale implementation provoked fundamental questions about the editorial proposition of a show that, I believe, has now run its course. “Channel 4 has always thrived on reinvention and this is a moment to kickstart a new era of creative renewal, using the considerable budget to find the next generation of distinctive and disruptive British television.” Addressing the allegations featured in Panorama, Dogra added: “I would like to repeat that I am very sorry for the distress those women have clearly felt. “I hope our actions - in swiftly commissioning the review and taking clear, decisive steps - demonstrate our commitment to the wellbeing of all contributors.” Channel 4 plans to share the findings and recommendations with other UK broadcasters to help strengthen industry-wide standards across reality television.
