@fred_duncan: One of the most interesting things about studying sprint mechanics is seeing the different movement signatures of individual athletes and how each athlete solves the problem of running fast. There’s even differences between acceleration, a 100m vs 400m vs mile, etc. That’s why I love these videos from the TCU Running Lab. Max velocity sprinting is also a very unique skill and the mechanics can look quite different from what people typically associate with good running form. That’s because max v sprinting comes with a very specific set of demands. It’s a skill that can only be maintained for a relatively short period of time and the combination of enormous ground reaction forces, extremely short contact times and rapid limb repositioning creates a very distinct movement signature. The athlete needs to generate and manage tremendous forces while preparing the limbs for the next ground contact. There’s very little time available to accomplish any of it. This is also one of the reasons I consider sprinting such an incredible training stimulus. From a plyometric perspective, we’re exposing the muscle tendon system to enormous forces over very short periods of time. The rapid loading and unloading involved in sprinting is difficult to replicate with traditional exercises. And from a strength / power perspective, the muscular demands are substantial as well. This is why sprinting has always been the foundation of my training programs. It’s the primary stimulus we’re trying to develop and improve, as it spills over into other areas. There’s no substitute for exposing an athlete to high speed sprinting if the goal is to become a faster... If you’re a competitive athlete looking to maximize your speed, check out Speed Kills. It’s my comprehensive 8 week speed development program, accompanied by an extensive 80 page ebook covering the principles, methods, and programming behind speed development. And if you’re someone who simply loves training hard, check out Strength X Speed. This is my 12-week hybrid training program, built around the way I currently train. #sprints #sprinting #getfaster #sprinttraining #speedtraining
